Boil Water Advisory
September 30, 2024 – 1:00 PM
Belmont Public Works Department has been made aware of discolored water throughout different areas of Belmont. We are actively trying to determine the cause within the distribution system. Crews are flushing hydrants in an attempt to mediate the issue, and samples have been collected for analysis in areas of complaint.
The discoloration in the water is referred to as turbidity. We routinely monitor your water for turbidity (clarity) at the treatment plant. This tells us whether we are effectively filtering the water supply. Test results on our treated water at the plant indicate the removal of all turbidity after treatment, which points to an issue in the distribution system beyond what the treatment plant can control.
While turbidity itself does not pose health risks, it can interfere with disinfection. The chlorine levels in the samples collected today are sufficient. However, we are still awaiting results for bacteria tests, which take 24 hours to process. As a precaution, we advise all customers to boil water used for human consumption (including drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation) or use bottled water until further notice.
Boiling water vigorously for one (1) minute is an effective method to eliminate any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water.
